I'm starting to neglect this journal

which was not my intention.

I saw Howling Bells last night, one of the best gigs I've been to all year, they sounded very good live. Having not seen them live before nor having heard more than a couple of their tracks, I was very impressed. Juanita's voice is not the only great thing about them, the musicianship as a band is impressive, epic sounds without sounding too drawn-out. All in all, a very good evening.

This is not a review by the way, my ability to write critically is severely limited, as you can see by this entry

According to the Highway Code, rectangular directional signs indicate a Tourist Destination or a Place of Interest.

I can see this doing wonders for any local pubs and restaurants in that area...

A political hero of mine - Sydney Silverman

Sydney Silverman, the son of a draper, was born in Liverpool on 8th October 1895. The family were very poor and two of the four children died before reaching adulthood.

Silverman won a scholarship to Liverpool Institute, the most important grammar school in the city. He also won a scholarship to Liverpool University.

In 1916 the government introduced military conscription. Silverman, a pacifist, refused to join the British Army during the First World War. Registered as a conscientious objector, Silverman served several prison sentences for his beliefs. His experiences in Wormwood Scrubs made him an advocate of penal reform.

After the war was over Silverman returned to Liverpool University to complete his studies. In 1921 he successfully applied for a teaching post at the University of Helsinki.

Silverman returned to England in 1925 and after further studies at Liverpool University he qualified as a solicitor in 1927. Over the next few years he developed a reputation as a solicitor who was willing to defend the interests of the poor in Liverpool. This included workmen's compensation claims and landlord-tenant disputes.

A member of the Labour Party, Silverman was elected as a city councillor in 1932. Soon afterwards he was adopted as the parliamentary candidate for Nelson and Colne and entered the House of Commons following the 1935 General Election.

Silverman retained his pacifists views until he discovered what was happening to the Jews in Nazi Germany. He therefore gave his full support to Britain's involvement in the Second World War.

When the Labour Party won the 1945 General Election Silverman was expected to be offered a post in the new government. However, Silverman held strong left-wing opinions and Clement Attlee decided against offering him a job. Over the next few years Silverman became highly critical of Ernest Bevin and his role as foreign secretary. He was particularly upset by his dealings with the Soviet Union.

Silverman was a strong opponent of capital punishment and in 1948 managed to persuade the House of Commons to agree to a five year suspension of executions. However, this clause in the Criminal Justice Bill was defeated in the House of Lords. As a result Silverman founded the Campaign for the Abolition of the Death Penalty. In 1953 he published his book, Hanged and Innocent?

In November 1954 Silverman, Michael Foot, and three others were expelled from the Labour Party for opposing its nuclear defence policy. Three years later Silverman joined with Kingsley Martin, J. B. Priestley, Bertrand Russell, Fenner Brockway, Vera Brittain, James Cameron, Jennie Lee, Victor Gollancz, Richard Acland, A. J. P. Taylor, Canon John Collins and Michael Foot to form the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

Silverman continued to campaign against capital punishment and in 1956 he introduced a private member's Bill for abolition. Once again it was defeated in the House of Lords.

After the 1964 General Election the new Labour Government agreed to introduce legislation to abandon capital punishment for five years. With overwhelming support in the House of Commons the House of Lords agreed to pass the measure.

Sydney Silverman died in hospital in Hampstead on 9th February 1968.

Sodom and Gomorrah

Just a brief entry today.

Whenever I meet with my family, my Dad usually embarrasses himself, and the rest of us in the process.

Anyway, *big* thunderstorm today in case you hadn't noticed, and my Dad thought it would be great to spend the day outside in Greenwich and visit the various maritime paraphenalia around there. Upon entering the Old Royal Naval College Chapel, there's a huge flash followed very sharply by a great chasm of thunder.

My Dad then says very loudly

"That always happens when I go in a church"

They're with Vince, are you? Um, no, you're alright. Thanks.

Londoners will have noticed these posters with Vince and his mates at various transport hubs. I'm not sure if it's heavily advertised elsewhere but here is the poster for those who don't know what I'm on about:

But who is Vince, and who is his group of frat-boy pals?

Well apparently it's a HBO series based on Mark "only ever released one decent flick and had the audacity to re-make The Italian Job" Wahlberg's experiences as a rising star in Hollywood (source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entourage_(TV_series)) I always thought his younger brother was far more talented...

The series has been hyped to death across the pond and if I were Vince, I'd lose my entourage as they look like the kind of nobfaces that after two or maybe even three 'Buds', start hollering, shouting 'Hell Yeah' and asking you if you're going on Spring Break next year. However, according to the series blurb, he relies on them to make him look good.

Err....

Pete's blog

Things I've never learnt today, never explain my nickname 'Texas Pete' to someone who wasn't a child in this country during the late 80s and early 90s. You have to explain yourself and subsequently look like an idiot. What also makes you look like an idiot is revealing to people that you know useless bits of info like Angel tube station has the longest escalator in London.

I should really know how to stop myself by now.

Enough. I have created a Blog. I last attempted one of these when I was back at university and made one entry introducing myself and then another about a week later with an entry along the lines of 'um, don't really have a lot more to say here...er..'

Luckily, I have become a bit more charasmatic since, meaning that within a month this will be filled with those endless surveys you get people posting as bulletins on myspace.

You know the ones I mean.

Finally, my housemates are being very pleasant and nice at the moment, which I think deserves a mention. 'Tis much appreciated in my current status (more on that soon!). Naughty points for Emma though for giving me those shots last night - tsk!

Oh, and I still can't get over Midnight Juggernauts, they are amazing. I recommend that you check out their track 'Shadows' - it's tremendous.

http://www.myspace.com/midnightjuggernauts
they're coming to London soon
